If your 401K has tanked and your mortgage is eating up your monthly income, then you may not be planning on trading in your old car any time soon, even if the odometer is already tipping 100,000.
Although a new car might offer style perks and better miles per gallon at the fuel pump, if your car is paid off you may instead be looking for ways to keep it on the road a little longer.
While cars several decades ago weren't expected to survive the 100,000-mile mark, those built more recently will last longer, as long as you perform proper maintenance. Vehicle and oil commercials may help reassure you when they talk about how long their car or truck has lasted, or the special benefits of a lubricant to an engine that has seen a lot of miles.
A broad term such as high mileage is dependant on more than just the odometer reading. 75,000 mile vehicles are most likely the ones you will be seeing when in fact the ones that qualify are the 50,000 mile vehicles. At this mark it is not running as it was when it was new and you should accept that.
As the miles on a car increase the performance decreases they both go hand in hand. Each hose, belt and component of the main engine are wearing down. By caring for these parts that support the car it is the easiest way of looking after your car. To stop the car overheating and prevent leaks you must periodically replace these belts, seals and hoses. Replacing these cheaper parts will prevent larger components from breaking down and needing to be replaced.
An old car needs constant maintenance. Absolutely everything from the air and oil filters to the hoses, belts and fluids must be changed to keep the car running well.
Oil must be changed regularly so keep an eye on it. When fluids especially oil leak from the engine it wears it down much faster and as vehicles age can have a damming impact on their performance. Look at the dipstick weekly rather than waiting for the oil light to appear in the car. Check the oil periodically, set your own timetable and ask your mechanic you may have a frequent one that knows your old car very well Your mileage and engine life can be extended with a little advice from your mechanic about special oils and additives. Check your oil often and set a routine up. Get your transmission fluid and oil changed as needed as well as your air filter.
Be sure to check the pressure of your tires and how worn they are. Vehicles tend to run better when the tires are at the correct pressure. Wheels alignments are also necessary to keep your tires wearing properly and your car running straight.
Listen to how your vehicle sounds and notice how it feels. You have had it for a while so any noises will be familiar to you. The noises that a car makes will change as it ages but any drastic changes must be referred to a mechanic. Something small can quickly become a large problem if left unattended.
