A Story On How The Tow Truck Was Invented & Its Importance To Us
The tow-truck has been an integral part of society since its invention in 1915. Before that, if your automobile broke down you you'd have to push it home or to the wreckers. Ernest Holmes, who lived in Tennessee is acknowledged with creating the first tow truck. He used three long poles and pulley to complete his design and designed the first tow truck ever seen. He didn't waste time in patenting his new creation, instead he opened the first towing business.
This was an instant success for him and his invention became used globally. The W-45 was the most famous of his trucks; featured during WW2 as became a delivery and supply truck during the whole war, roaming from Normandy to Belgium.
Besides being used in the war, it was also used to recover vehicles that were stuck or immobile up until 1973, the French army was still using it. With their amazing capability, it had the strength to pull up to fifteen tons. Operating his business right up until his death, Holmes' son Ernest Holmes Jr., then kept on with the family business till his own forced resignation in 1973. After leaving Dover Corp. acquired the company and another family member of the Holmes family started his own company, the Century Wreckers. This proved to be competition for Dover Corp.
